2009 Excellence In Business Awards

The Hills Excellence in Business Awards were first held in 1997 as an initiative of the Orange Blossom Board of Management and run as part of the Orange Blossom Festival. They were held as a joint event with the Excellence in Youth Awards.

In 2000, with both events growing in size and reputation, the decision was taken to hold the events separately and the Excellence in Business Awards became a stand-alone event.

The Excellence in Business Awards Committee saw an opportunity to work more closely with Council's Economic Development Team. Consequently the Committee applied to Council for 355 Management Committee status, which was granted in February 2003.

The change in the management of the Awards reflect the growth of the Awards and the growth of the businesses in the Shire. No longer are the Hills just a small rural producer of oranges, apples and mushrooms. While the rural produce is still significant and important, the corporate sector has experienced major growth, firstly with the Castle Hill Trading Zone and now with Norwest Business Park.

Home based businesses have increased in number and size and the retail sector has also grown, with large extensions to Castle Towers and more to come. Rouse Hill Regional Centre will be one of the biggest town centre developments in the southern hemisphere.

The categories in the Excellence in Business Awards are reviewed annually and over the last few years has moved away from industry based to now having all Award categories based on key business principles that are crucial for business success. This year there are 8 Excellence in Business Awards categories.

There are also 4 Awards of Distinction which will be selected by the judges.
Excellence in Home Based Business, Excellence in Start Up Business, Excellence in Small Business and Excellence in Medium and Large Business. These are judges choice Awards selected from the Finalists across all categories.

The purpose of the awards is to recognise, promote and reward business excellence in the Hills. Businesses self nominate and are judged, firstly on their entry form, and then for businesses who go onto stage 2 a visit to the business premises by qualified judges. The emphasis in judging is on how the business owner or manager works on their business, and involves a rigorous criteria which must include all aspects of best business practice. The awards are open to all businesses within The Hills Shire.

The Hills Excellence in Business Awards are annually reviewed through feedback and evaluation forms held after each year's Gala event. Changes that are recommended and endorsed by the committee are incorporated in the next year's events, ensuring a continuing process of evolvement and reflection of changes in the local, dynamic business community.
